Nissan pledges "iconic" design

TOKYO -- Nissan pledges to add an “iconic” design to keep its lineup quirky after cutting two of the brand’s most polarizing nameplates, the Cube and Murano CrossCabriolet.

Andy Palmer, the chief planning officer who wants to make Nissan known for styling as well as technology, says the brand needs a head-turner to underscore its innovative image.

Since 2009, that role had been filled by the boxy Cube compact, which detractors dubbed the rolling refrigerator. Nissan pushed the design envelope again in 2011, when it introduced the Murano CrossCabriolet, a convertible version of its Murano crossover.

Both of those slow-sellers were dropped from the company’s 2015 lineup, but Nissan wants another offering that will generate just as much buzz.

To be clear, we will morph this space in our portfolio into something iconic,” Palmer told Automotive News in an e-mail. “The space is held to make sure we have something iconic.”

Palmer didn’t offer hints as to what is in the works.

But Nissan has dangled plenty of concepts that would fit the bill. Chief among them is the wedge-shaped BladeGlider, which debuted at last year’s Tokyo Motor Show. Another might draw from the IDx, a Datsun 510-inspired sporty coupe concept unveiled at the same time.

Nissan has remained tantalizingly vague about any plans to bring these cars to showrooms.
The BladeGlider will never pass safety and other vehicle standards in the U.S., so this new iconic vehicle won't be the BladeGlider. I think this article strongly implies that the IDx is in the works -- Nissan's current "iconic" models are the sporty 370Z and GT-R. Having an entry level iconic sports car, as the IDx, seems like a perfect fit.

What does iconic mean to you, anyway?

The IDx needs to join these two iconic Nissans:

at least when it comes to a really affordable vehicle that is iconic they can make the idx fill that role, aside from that it will be the next gen GT-R, for the short-term future.

IDX is a definite possibility and it would also be a huge improvement over the Cube which was ugly as ****.

I hope they go the way of the IDX and don't do something stupid like the Cube again. Nobody likes those traveling boxes.

The Cube always looked like a rolling refrigerator to me. And heaven help you if you chose a white Cube. I'd rather not drive a fridge, thanks.

I wouldn't call the Cube or the Murano Cab iconic, maybe idiotic, perhaps ironic that Nissan thinks they are iconic?

Blade glider won't make it to production not because of safety concerns but because they ripped the design from Don Panoz, the only reason he cant touch Nissan for it is because the design has only been used in the ZEOD for racing, once they earn a dime its over.

As different as the Cube is, it definitely isn't iconic, not even close.

It's cars like an IDX production model and the GT-R which will be iconic.

I think that iconic is more than just unique. I think an icon is a trendsetter of sorts. It may be the first of its kind, but it spurs others that copy it. It becomes influential over other vehicles.
